About US

A long time ago, but several years after this school picture was taken, our parents and sister Carrie opened a flower shop in Petworth. The shop had previously been a haberdashery and the first sale back in July 1980 was a reel of cotton. It didn’t take long for the flower shop to grow in popularity selling flowers, plants and vintage garden tools. Back then many of the flowers were locally grown, with supplied by nurseries from along the south coast and in the surrounding villages.

At the tender age of 18, Matthew joined the team after a brief spell working in a local nursery and he took to floristry like a duck to water. Training both under Carrie and attending an Interflora diploma course, he quickly developed his own floral style. Taking inspiration from the countryside and in particular the woods he had played in as a child, Matthew incorporated moss, twigs and lichens into his work alongside the beautiful flowers that come into the shop from both British growers and our friends in The Netherlands.

Matthew’s other passions include teaching, both small groups and one-to-ones, along with floral demonstrations, some of which have raised several thousands of pounds for local charities. More recently, in 2019 Matthew flew out to Bali to undertake yoga teacher training and he is now a qualified tutor, managing to fit classes around his commitment to Spriggs Florist.

Having started her career in the hospitality and then print industries, Samantha joined the team in 1995. This background equipped her with a beady eye for detail and order, making her the ideal steady hand on the tiller required by the customers, be they Brides, the recently bereaved, Corporate Events companies, or simply a walk-in customer who needs guidance purchasing a bouquet. Samantha is also a keen photographer and a fabulous cook.

Carrie left the business when she started a family, but she now has her own Bespoke floristry consultancy and can still occasionally be seen at the shop when many hands are required to make lighter work.

There is also a tradition of a shop dog. The current incumbent is Madi, Samantha’s Westie, but it probably won’t be long before her crown is toppled by another canine pal!
